SHBG

What is SHBG(Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin)?

SHBG stands for Sex Hormone Binding Globulin. It's a protein that's made by your liver and it has an important job: carrying and controlling sex hormones in your body, like testosterone and estrogen.

Why is it measured?

SHBG is critical for analysis of a variety of issues, such as:

  1. Hormonal balance/imbalance.
  2. Men's and Womens health. High levels are problematic in males, while low values are problematic in females.
  3. Thyroid and Liver issues.

How can I better understand my results?

Lower Levels: Low SHBG might indicate an increase in testosterone levels in the body. This is problematic in women as it could lead to unwanted effects such as acne or irregular menstrual cycles.

Higher Levels: High SHBG may mean that there are lower amounts of testosterone than usual in your body, which is problematic in men. This is linked to symptoms such as low sex drive or muscular strength.
